Artist information

Emmanuel Okoro was born in Nigeria, Bendel state in 1972 into a family of well-established artists and business people. He studied at the sculpture academy of Art also with Christopher Bramble ceramics, between 1992- 2000.

His subject is always humanity, relationships between oneself within the society in which he lives. The forms may be heads, parts of figures, whole figures. Movements in stillness particularly fascinate him: He feels that he is directly linked with those who have tried to fashion the human form from the earliest times. His greatest achievement would be to create a timeless image. His mature works examine the relationship between human beings and their emotions, who have precious qualities in common, 'the qualities we are deeply in touch with subconsciously and may be totally out of touch within our conscious state. All the works are made with great attention both to the surface quality and texture of the clay and plaster at the end these complements the work particularly to the colours, which range from natures wondrous effects that merge with a bronze, iron and marble body to bright turquoise contrasting surfaces. In recent bronze casts, he has chosen a range of pale patinas.

The titles of the sculptures go beyond the need for mere identification - instead they clarify my thoughts behind a work, even during making: 'the mood or idea of the piece can change as a face is drawn; an idea begins to form and a title can suggest itself.' Later this gives a hint to the viewer, hopefully leaving room for personal imaginings.
